Film Poster Terminology and Features

Here is the slide from Monday's lesson with the film poster features and terminology:

Blog Task: Photo Manipulation

Take some photographs of the posters/annotations you created in today's lesson.

Create a blog post explaining the task that was set and how it ties in with what we've been studying, and how it has potentially helped inform your own poster designs.

You should also evaluate what you've learned from it.

Here are the images from the lesson if you need them for your post:

Success at A2: The Importance of Research

Just a quick note to remind you that detailed research/exploration of existing examples is even more important at A2.

For most of you, your main target is to provide more evidence of planning and research before starting your practical task; make sure you keep up-to-date with the suggested blog tasks I'm setting for you to ensure you have enough detail to achieve the top band for your P&R.

Please note, you will also need to complete tasks based on the lessons you have with RAB as well as mine; there should be a blog post after each theory lesson (the more detailed the better). You should also use your class notes to inform your research.

Blog Task: Consistency in Film Promotion

Find two examples of film posters of different (preferably contrasting) genres. Include the images of the posters on your blog.

Explore the ways in which the film posters and trailers are consistent in style, and also how they convey the plot and genre and appeal to their target audience across all mediums. (Include a link or embed them onto the blog)

Blog Task: Film Promotion and Marketing

Choose a film that has recently been released, or is about to be released, and create a case study of the different ways in which the film company has promoted the feature.
Focus on the range of different medias film companies use as part of their promotion and marketing . Examples we explored in today's lesson:
  • Film posters/trailers/advertising
  • Websites/social media
  • Merchandise/soundtrack
  • Interviews/articles
  • Film festivals/reviews
Explore and provide examples of this for your chosen film, and provide some comments and explanation.

Remember, a film marketing campaign generally consists of three parts:

Advertising - paid for by the studio to sell the film to the target audience. E.g. the film poster

Publicity - not paid for directly by the studio, but used to create interest in the film, e.g. an interview given by one of the stars of the film

Tie-ins - authorised products designed to generate additional publicity and income for the studio and film

Note: You need to use a range of as many different media forms as possible when blogging, so you could try something new like Prezzi and upload it to your blog.
